When the World Feels Shaky: Finding Steadiness in God

Do things in your life feel out of control? Like the ground beneath your feet is constantly shifting and shaking?

You look at the news and you see believers around the world being persecuted for their faith, hate speech spreading, antisemitism on the rise around the world and in America, and even Charlie Kirk being murdered with his death celebrated because the truth he spoke offended a group of people.

It can feel overwhelming. It’s tempting to just shut off the news, disconnect, and close yourself off from what’s happening in the world.

I get it. I’ve been there too.

And while stepping back is sometimes necessary for your mental and spiritual health, it’s crucial to do so with the right mindset.

Remember Who Our God Is

When life feels unstable, the most powerful thing you can do is remember who God is.

James 1:17 reminds us:

“Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”
an empty room full of windows. The room is dark and the light from the windows is casting a shadows onto the ground.

God does not change like shifting shadows.

In the midst of chaos. God himself is in Control. Just like the seasons, life is full of constant change — but God does not change. He doesn’t shift or fade like shadows moving from sunrise to sunset.

He is our solid rock. Our firm foundation. Our steadiness.

God’s Unchanging Nature Brings Confidence

Hebrews 13:6-8 says:

“So we say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?’ Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

We can say with confidence that The Lord is my helper, therefore we do not have to live in fear of what mere mortals can do.

Jesus the Messiah is the same yesterday, today, and forever. Whoa.

That means the God of the Old Testament is the same God of the New Testament — His heart hasn’t changed, His promises haven’t changed nor shifted, and His position hasn’t changed.

When Life Feels Overwhelming

When your heart is weighed down, when everything in your life feels uncertain, there is one constant you can hold on to: Jesus.

Look to Him.

He is worthy to be gazed upon. He is worthy to be relied upon. He is worthy to be your firm foundation. He is God himself.

Revelation 22:13 reminds us:

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the First and the Last, the Beginning and the End.”

God is unshakable, unchanging, and faithful forever.

Reflection

Where in your life do you need to remember that God hasn’t changed?

Take a moment to pause, breathe, and invite Him into the very situation that feels out of control. He is your helper, your steady rock, and the one who never changes.
