In a world filled with constant rushing, endless tasks, and exhaustion, many believers struggle to slow down long enough to rest in God’s presence. If you’ve been longing for Sabbath rest, craving quiet moments with God, or wondering how to hear God’s gentle whisper in the middle of a busy life, you’re not alone. Today, we’re going to look at what it really means to be still before the Lord and cultivate a lifestyle of spiritual rest.
Are you living as if time is running out?
Do you ever have those moments when you rush out the door, get in the car, and pull out of the driveway as fast as possible to get to your destination? When you arrive, you hop out of the car only to repeat the same thing. You get home only to rush to make dinner. By the time dinner is done, you are cleaning. Maybe you have some free time, so you use it to scroll on your phone or watch TV before going to bed.
Living this way can become exhausting pretty quickly.
A lot of my days recently have looked similar to what I described above: constant striving. My body was full of tension as I was trying to get from one moment to the next.
But in the midst of my days, I freeze when I see the sun hitting in the perfect way. I don’t know what it is about it, but it reminds me to be still.

Finding Quiet Moments Before the Lord
Over the last month, my days have been so busy that I have not made time for rest. I have neglected the Sabbath.
Being still is a gift. Having moments of rest throughout the day to sit with God is a lifestyle that I want to continue to cultivate.
Quiet moments before the Creator of the world are what sustain me. It’s in the quiet moments, when we are still long enough, that we can hear the voice of God.
Hearing God in the Gentle Whisper (1 Kings 19)
In 1 Kings 19, Elijah is tired and weary. He is in a cave, and God calls to him, saying, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by” (1 Kings 19:11).
If you’ve read this story before, you would know that God sent a wind that tore the mountain apart and shattered the rocks, but the Lord wasn’t in the wind. Then he sent an earthquake, but the Lord wasn’t in the earthquake. Then came a fire, and even though God had just revealed himself through fire to Elijah in previous chapters, God wasn’t in the fire.
After all of this, his presence appeared in a gentle whisper (1 Kings 19).
God showed that, though he can appear in all those powerful ways, he can come in the gentle whisper as well—in the stillness, in the quiet moments.
Choosing to Sit in the Quiet With God
Will you be still before the Lord long enough to hear his voice?
Will you give up an evening of watching your favorite show to allow your spirit to be refreshed by the presence of God?
In the mornings when you wake, will you set time aside to read the Word of God?
On your drives from one location to the next, will you turn the music off and have intentional conversations with God?
When you’re washing the dishes, will you meditate on Scripture?
These questions aren’t just for you—they’re for me too. Choosing stillness is a daily decision, one we often have to make moment by moment. But when we slow down long enough to sit before the Lord, we find the rest our souls have been craving.
Life with God isn’t lived in the rush. It’s cultivated in the quiet moments—one intentional choice at a time.
