Have you ever noticed yourself praying more about your personal wants and dreams than earnestly pursuing God’s purpose for your life? It’s a challenge many of us encounter in our faith journey.
The deeper question is this: Are we genuinely seeking God's will, or are we simply asking him to bless our plans?

Understanding God’s Heart for Our Desires
When we pray for God’s will to be done, we’re making a profound declaration. We’re essentially saying, “God, I value Your desires and Your purpose for my life more than my own dreams.”
The Psalmists says,
“Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4)?
Doesn’t that mean God wants to give me my desires? If your desires align with the heart of God and His divine plan, then yes! But it starts with aligning our hearts with God’s will.
Let’s be clear — God absolutely cares about our desires. He is not distant or detached from our hopes and dreams.
In fact, He understands them intimately. King David shares this insight with Solomon in 1 Chronicles 28:9a:
“And you, my son Solomon, acknowledge the God of your father, and serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for the Lord searches every heart and understands every desire and every thought…”
It’s not that God doesn’t understand us — He absolutely does. But God is calling His children to something higher.
In today’s world, there’s a constant emphasis on self: “My plans. My passions. My purpose.” And while it’s beautiful to have passions, we are called to pursue God more than the passion or calling we carry. We must desire Him more than ourselves. This is the heart of true Christian surrender.
Scripture makes this clear again and again:
Delight yourself in the Lord (Psalm 37:4)
Acknowledge God and serve Him wholeheartedly (1 Chronicles 28:9)
The pursuit of God must come first. When we delight in Him and walk closely with Him, our hearts begin to align with His. What’s on God’s heart gets placed on ours. His desires become our desires.
Aligning Our Desires with God’s Will
So how do we practically align our desires with God’s will for our life? The answer lies in pursuing God’s heart above all else. This means intentionally seeking Jesus more than we seek:
Personal ambitions and dreams
Career goals and achievements
Relationships and future plans
Worldly success or comfort
When Jesus becomes our primary pursuit, something beautiful happens. Our desires aren’t suppressed or ignored — they are transformed. In the presence of God and with a surrendered heart, our longings begin to reflect the heart of the Father.
When we seek Jesus above all else, we discover that His plans are more fulfilling than anything we could have designed ourselves. It’s not always the easiest path — but every step with him is worth everything. Our hearts begin to beat in rhythm with His, and our deepest desires begin to align with His perfect will.
What Does Christian Surrender Look Like?
This journey isn’t about perfection — it’s about pursuit. Each day presents a fresh opportunity to surrender and seek. This is what Christian surrender looks like: choosing God over ourselves, again and again.
Maybe God is asking you to let go of something — a job, a relationship, even a ministry role. Maybe He’ll give it back, or maybe He won’t. But no matter what the outcome is, we can trust this: God’s plan will always bring glory to His name. This is the beauty of dying to our desires and allowing him to give us his desires.
Start today by asking God to align your heart with His. Pursue His presence. Study His Word. Practice what you learn. In pursuing him you will see him begin to reshape your desires to match His perfect will.
“Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart.” – Psalm 37:4
