God is Unchanging
It is easy to project human inconsistency and bad experiences onto God — to believe He’s distant, easily angered, or tired of forgiving. But Scripture paints a very different picture.
From Genesis to Revelation, God reveals Himself as compassionate, patient, loving, and just. God doesn't change like shifting shadows; His character doesn’t shift with circumstances — it remains steady and trustworthy.
Let’s take a moment to look at Scriptures to remind ourselves of God’s true character.
God is compassionate and forgiving
“But you, Lord, are a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.”
What a beautiful truth. God is a compassionate and gracious father.
In the next passage, the Prophet Micah is lamenting over Israels repeated sins and he pleads with God for mercy and to shepherd his people. The ending of chapter 7, Micah is expressing his hope in God’s great compassion:
“You will again have compassion on us; you will tread our sins underfoot and hurl all our iniquities into the depths of the sea.”
Praise the Lord.
Just like the Jewish people; despite our own mistakes we have made in our lives. God’s love and forgiveness will always remain.
God is gentle
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
Jesus claims this truth about himself. He says that he is the one who can tend and care for us when we are weary and burdened.
Why can we trust Him to bring us rest? Because he himself is gentle and humble in heart and because of this when we draw near to him we will find rest for our souls.
God’s love is sacrificial
“This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.”
The greatest love to be shown is to have someone lay down their live for another. The God of the world. The one who created the earth and the heavens. Came to earth and gave his life as a sacrifice for our sins. Something that he never would deserve because He is perfect. Jesus humbly and willingly died for us. A Sacrificial love.
God is a righteous judge
While God is loving and forgiving he is also just.
“Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. The earth and the heavens fled from his presence, and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened. Another book was opened, which is the book of life. The dead were judged according to what they had done as recorded in the books.”
There are so many scriptures throughout the Bible that display God as just. Gods justice ensures that the wicked do not go unpunished. God’s judgement is always fair and pure. He is the only one who saves. He is the forgiver of sins. He is love himself. And that same God is also the one who rules with authority and justice.
God disciplines in love
“In your struggle against sin, you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding your blood. And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says, “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son.”Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as his children. For what children are not disciplined by their father? If you are not disciplined—and everyone undergoes discipline—then you are not legitimate, not true sons and daughters at all. Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of spiritsand live! They disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, in order that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.”
We can praise the Lord in his discipline because it comes from a place of love. A place of calling his children to be better. To bring about purity. Our God is a loving father who disciplines his children out of love.
God is patient
“Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?"
“The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”
It is God’s kindness and patients that leads us to repentance. His heart is for not a single person to perish. He longs for all his creation to know him and become his children. Our God is patient.
God is slow to anger
“The Lord is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made.”
God is slow to anger. He is not quick tempered. This scripture speaks so beautifully on who God is.
Gracious, compassionate, slow to anger, rich in love, and good to all.
How have you seen God this way in your life?
God is merciful and gracious
“Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin. Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”
Jesus understands our humanity. He understands what it is to be tempted and to suffer. Because of this he can empathize with us in our weaknesses and of we can go to the Lord with boldness and confidence knowing that he will help us in our time of need.
And what will we receive when we go before the Lord?
Both mercy and grace.
Our God is merciful and gracious.
Our Solid Foundation
There is so much more scripture we could dive into regarding who God is and how God has chosen to reveal himself to us.
Every single one of these scriptures reveals a piece of God’s heart. To think that God wants his children to know his own heart is so beautiful.
If you are not seeing God rightly I pray that these scripture verses will begin to help you know more of God. Because when we begin to understand his character and ex
perience him as being gentle, patient, kind, forgiving, compassionate, just, etc. we will be able to trust him more deeply.
God has not changed. His character and emotions aren't based on ours. He is steady. Praise the Lord!
