Pure Spiritual Milk: The Meaning of 1 Peter 2:2 Explained

a picture with a black background. You see the hands of a father holding his new born baby. Showing the tender care of a father.

Today we're breaking down 1 Peter 2:2 and uncovering the powerful meaning behind Peter's instruction to "crave pure spiritual milk." Scripture often uses "milk" to describe spiritual immaturity—so why does Peter encourage believers to desire it? We'll cover the historical context of 1 Peter, why early Christians were encouraged to crave spiritual milk, the difference between spiritual infancy and spiritual nourishment, and how Scripture grows and strengthens your walk with practical steps for craving God's Word and maturing in salvation.

Historical Context of 1 Peter

The Apostle Peter, one of the 12 disciples of Jesus, authored this book. While Peter commissioned the letter, his coworker Silas composed it (1 Peter 5:12-13). It was written to early Gentile and Jewish believers in Jesus who were experiencing persecution from their Greek and Roman neighbors (1 Peter 2:12). Peter was in Rome when the letter was sent to multiple church communities within the Roman province.

The Main Themes of 1 Peter

  • Jesus is our hope in suffering

  • Suffering opens an opportunity to show the love of Jesus

  • Let us expectantly await Jesus’ return.

1 Peter Chapters 1 and 2

Keeping these themes in mind we are going to read first Peter chapter one before diving into first Peter chapter two to provide context for the verse "crave pure spiritual milk."

1 Peter 1:13-16, 22-23

Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance. But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for each other, love one another deeply, from the heart. For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.

Let us pickup in 1 Peter 2:1-2

“Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. Like newborn babies, crave pure spiritual milk, so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, now that you have tasted that the Lord is good."

Is this symbolism Positive or Negative

In 1 Peter 2:2 craving this "pure spiritual milk" is something that is seen as a positive, however this symbolism of drinking milk in other areas of scripture is seen as a negative and is even spoken as a rebuke.

1 Corinthians 3:1-3 says,

“Brothers and sisters, I could not address you as people who live by the Spirit but as people who are still worldly—mere infants in Christ. I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans?”

This idea of still feeding on milk is negatively spoken on as a rebuke for immaturity and this same concept is found in Hebrews 5.

Hebrews 5:12-14 says,

“In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.”

These believers again and again have been taught the elementary of the faith. Never graduating to eating solid food. If you listen to the podcast episode of this blog I speak deeper on this topic and how most of the Churches in America sadly represent this.

Pure Spiritual Milk

With the other scriptures in mind - what is this spiritual milk that Peter is speaking about that we are to be craving?

I am going to give you two other translations of 1 Peter 2:2 that break down even further this verse.

NLT: “Like newborn babies, you must crave pure spiritual milk so that you will grow into a full experience of salvation. Cry out for this nourishment.”

NKJV: “as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow.”

“Desire the pure milk of the word” and “grow into a full experience of salvation. Cry out for this nourishment”

To crave this pure spiritual milk is to grow in our salvation to have a hunger and a craving for a nourishment from the word of God. A craving for Jesus who claims to be the very word (John 1:1-5).

An Example of this Craving:

The Lord has placed friends in my life who have kids and I’ve had the blessing of walking alongside them with new born babies.

One of the things I've witnessed with my friends is that when their babies are hungry and craving milk from their mothers they will cry-out until they drink the milk of their mother - once they receive this milk they are satisfied.

In the same way a hungry baby craves the milk of its Mother so we should be craving the pure spiritual milk that only comes from the Lord. We must be hungry for him. And only be satisfied when we receive him. Ridding ourselves of the things of this world and craving Pure Spiritual things that are from God.

Peter shows us as we looked in the previous verses of 1 Peter that we are not to be craving the things of this world, but hunger for Holy Things.

Hunger for someone who is Holy.

Jesus. The word himself.

Why? So that we may grow up in salvation.

What does it mean to “Grow up in salvation?”

The NLT version says, to “grow into a full experience of salvation.”

This is to be actively maturing and becoming like Christ. If we are to be as 1 Peter 1:16 says, “Be holy, because I am holy.” Then we would be actively nourishing our souls with the word of God. Allowing him to work within us to bring us to deeper faith. This isnt something that happens once but is something we will be doing our whole lives.

Practical Steps

How do we begin to crave Jesus, his word, and his presence? How do we have this craving of Pure Spiritual Milk and grow in our walk of salvation?

  1. Thirst for the living God (Psalm 42:1-2)

“As the deer pants for streams of water,

so my soul pants for you, my God.

My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.

When can I go and meet with God?”

Begin to pray that God would put a thirst for him in your life. Where he is the only one that satisfies. He has already ignited the fire in your heart, but it is up to you to keep it burning.

  1. Obedience (John 14:15)

Jesus says, “If you love me, keep my commands.”

Be obedient in what he has been speaking to you, nudging you towards, and calling you too. Jesus wants to be loved by you. Even though our love is imperfect compared to his perfect love, he tells us how to love him. Show him you love him by obeying him.

  1. Put into practice (James 1:22-25)

"Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says. Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like. But whoever looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues in it—not forgetting what they have heard, but doing it—they will be blessed in what they do.”

You cannot just read the word of the living God and then do nothing. It’s like falling on blind eyes and death ears. You must allow it to transform you and put it into practice.

And this goes into the fourth and last point.

  1. You must be pruned (John 15:1-8)

“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

“I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.  If you do not remain in me, you are like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. This is to my Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples."

Pruning is painful, but when we welcome it knowing the fruit that will be produced there will be much joy. We must welcome his pruning knowing that it is making us more like him.

This is my brother and sisters is how we crave the Pure Spiritual Milk and grow in our walk of salvation.
